(EGYPT) CAPART, Jean and WERBROUK, Marcelle. Memphis a l’Ombre des Pyramides. Brussels: Chez Vromant, 1930. Folio (measuring 10 by 13 inches), original black- and gilt-stamped pictorial blue cloth.

First edition, presentation copy, of this study of the city of Memphis in Egypt and its magnificent pyramids, written by accomplished Egyptologist Jean Capart in collaboration with Marcelle Werbrouck, with dozens of half-tones depicting Memphis, its major sites, and the results of the archaeological work completed there, inscribed: “A Son Altesse Royale le Prince Léopold President d’Honneur de la Fondation Egyptologique en hommage affectueusement dévoué, Jean Capart, mars 1930” and signed by his co-author Marcelle Werbrouk, in lovely original gilt-stamped pictorial cloth.

This work discusses the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis and its impressive pyramids. It was written as part of a series for the Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth, which was founded by the Belgian queen in response to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. The queen chose to visit there to see the tomb in person, along with her son, Prince Léopold, and accompanied by Jean Capart. Jean Capart was a prominent Egyptologist who, among other accomplishments, directed the excavations at El-Kab. Upon assuming the position of director of the queen’s new foundation, Capart immediately undertook a project to expand the Egyptology library at the Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History and to increase understanding of the ancient world in general. This work was one of the elaborate collaborations between Capart and Werbrouk, intended to shed light on one of Egypt’s best loved cities. Text in French. This book is inscribed to Prince Léopold (later King Léopold III), an Egyptophile who went with Capart on the original expedition to King Tutankhamen’s tomb. Capart inscribed and dedicated other books to Léopold, including a book on Thebes, for which Léopold took one of the photographs.

A beautiful copy in about-fine condition.
