ORIGINAL OTTO JANOWITZ MANUSCRIPT SCORE
JANOWITZ, Otto. “Passage” for Jean Erdman. No place, 1945. Quarto, three leaves of lined music paper. $1600.
Original manuscript working score of a piece composed for the dancer and choreographer Jean Erdman, signed by the composer on the first page of music.
This partial manuscript includes the “vocal part” (flute) for the entire piece, signed by Janowitz, and the last 17 measures of the vocal part with the piano accompaniment. Czech-born composer Janowitz wrote the piece specifically for dancer and choreographer Jean Erdman, a former member of the Martha Graham Dance company until she founded her own company in 1944. Numerous prominent composers wrote pieces for her, including John Cage and Alan Hovhaness. Married to Joseph Campbell, she eventually became a professor of modern dance at Columbia University. In ink with numerous revisions and notes.
Light soiling and edge-wear, a few small closed tears to margins. Very good condition.
