THE TRUE FIRST EDITION OF HENRY JAMES' THE WINGS OF THE DOVE, 1902

JAMES, Henry. The Wings of the Dove. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1902. Two volumes. Octavo, original brown sateen cloth, top edges gilt, uncut; housed in a custom slipcase.

First American edition, the true first edition, preceding the English edition, of one of James' landmark novels.

Considered one of James' greatest novels of subtle character portrayal, detailing the days of "the vivid and magnificent yet corrupt Kate Croy… trapped, forced, held down by her social circumstances" (Barbara Everett, Times Literary Supplement, 2005). "In his last three novels, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors, and The Golden Bowl, he returned to the 'international' theme of the contrast of American and European character" (Drabble, 503). The Wings of the Dove later became the inspiration for the opera of the same title by Douglas Moore in 1961. Actress Helena Bonham Carter garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress as Kate Croy in the 1997 film adaptation of the novel. The New York edition preceded the publication of the English edition by nine days. Edel & Laurence A56a. Phillips, 56-7. BAL 10647. Contemporary bookplates and owner signatures. Tiny bookseller tickets.

Only a couple minor spots of soiling to interiors, a few tiny stains to cloth, expert joint repairs to both volumes, mild toning to spines. An extremely good copy.
