(ROBINSON, Jackie) SMITH, Wendell. Jackie Robinson. My Own Story. New York: Greenberg, (1948). Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition, softcover issue, of Jackie Robinson’s autobiography as told to reporter Wendell Smith, inscribed on the title page: “Best Wishes Jackie Robinson.”

“The autobiography of the first major league African-American player, written one year after his National League rookie season” (Grobani 8-48). “Probably no other athlete has had a greater sociological impact on American sport than did Jackie Robinson. His success on the baseball field opened the door to black baseball players and thereby transformed the game. He also helped to facilitate the acceptance of black athletes in other professional sports, particularly basketball and football. His influence spread beyond the realm of sport, as he emerged in the late 1940s and 1950s as an important national symbol of the virtue of racial integration in all aspects of American life” (ANB). This book was published simultaneously with a hardcover issue. With numerous half-tones. Grobani 8-48. Smith 18353. Owner signature on front wrapper and first page of text.

Wrappers expertly reinforced to text block, a bit of wear and toning to extremities. An extremely good copy.
