"YOU LOVE ME, YOU LOVE ME, YOU LOVE ME": FIRST EDITION OF INGE'S PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING PLAY, PICNIC, SIGNED FOUR ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS INCLUDING EILEEN HECKART, ELIZABETH WILSON, RALPH MEEKER, AND PAUL NEWMAN
INGE, William. Picnic. New York: Random House, (1953). Octavo, original gray cloth, mounted cover illustration, original dust jacket.
First edition of Inge's provocative drama of small town life, winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Play and the basis for the 1955 Oscar-winning film starring William Holden and Kim Novak, signed by four members of the original cast on the cast list page: Eileen Heckart, Elizabeth Wilson, Ralph Meeker, and Paul Newman.
"A dramatic achievement of first rank," William Inge's award-winning drama opened on Broadway in February, 1953 and ran for 477 performances (New York Times). Directed by Joshua Logan, who also directed the 1955 film adaptation, Picnic was the second of Inge's plays to be produced on Broadway in only three years, and starred Paul Newman in a supporting role. Stars Ralph Meeker and Janice Rule were understudied by Newman and Joanne Woodward. Illustrated with black-and-white illustrations from the original Broadway production. Paul Newman signatures are quite rare. He "stopped signing autographs when people started slipping pieces of paper under the walls of bathroom stalls," (NPR), making this copy particularly desirable. Faint red mark along bottom of text block. Occasional pencil annotations related to performance.
Book near-fine, with long closed tear to page 43, light rubbing and soiling to extremities. Dust jacket extremely good, with some toning, shallow chipping to extremities, and flap joints starting. A desirable multi-signed copy.
