"WHAT SHE HAD CONSIDERED HER CROSS, SHE NOW SAW AS HER GLORY": FIRST EDITION OF SERAPH ON THE SUWANEE, ZORA NEALE HURSTON'S LAST NOVEL

HURSTON, Zora Neale. Seraph on the Suwanee. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1948. Octavo, original grey cloth, original dust jacket. $5000.

First edition of Hurston's last novel, in the scarce dust jacket.

Unusual for a novel by Hurston, Seraph on the Suwanee narrates not the lives and folkways of African-Americans but of a small-town white couple in Hurston's native Florida, allowing her to focus more exclusively on the relationship between men and women and the nature of marriage.

Book with light discoloration to cloth; bright dust jacket with light rubbing and edgewear to spine ends and corners, a few short closed tears, very mild soiling to rear panel. A very good copy.
