"TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE LOOKED NOT ONLY AT AFRICAN AMERICANS AND ART BUT AT THE WORLD": FIRST EDITION OF FIELDS OF WONDER, 1947, SCARCE PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY LANGSTON HUGHES

HUGHES, Langston. Fields of Wonder. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947. Original green cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Hughes' timeless collection of poems, a distinctive presentation/association copy inscribed by him,"To Suzal Weil—with the regard—of Langston Hughes. Black Mountain College, 2/8/49."

Fields of Wonder, published while Hughes was a visiting writer in residence at Atlanta University, contains over 70 poems in nine sections, including the poem "Border Line," which was the one work Hughes chose when asked to submit a poem for the 1962 anthology, Poet's Choice. Fields of Wonder has been especially praised for passages that spark "a sudden, sensitive gasp of feeling" (New York Times). Over the course of his extraordinary career, "Hughes sought to change the way people looked not only at African Americans and art but at the world" (ANB). Bruccoli & Clark, 161. Blockson 5248. Hughes spoke at Black Mountain College the same month as his inscription here to artist Susan Weil (here, "Suzal"). "Recognized as one of the most influential female artists of Abstract Expressionism," her work moves within and "across paintings, sculptures, cyanotypes, fragmented panels and digital prints" (Ocula). After studying in Paris, it was at Black Mountain that Weil studied with Bauhaus artist Josef Albers and began her collaboration with Robert Rauchenberg, who she later married. Weil's innovative work, which is seen in museums around the world, including MoMA and New York's Met, also explores interactions between writing and drawing in what she calls a "poemumble."

Book fine; light edge-wear with mild toning to spine, minimal tape reinforcement to verso of bright near-fine dust jacket.
