A MASTERPIECE OF CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY, WITH 152 FINE FOLIO COLOR PLATES OF SPLENDID BINDINGS IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY OF WINDSOR CASTLE

(BOOKBINDING) HOLMES, Richard Rivington. Specimens of Royal Fine and Historical Bookbinding, Selected from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. London: W. Griggs and Sons, 1893. Folio (11-1/2 by 15 inches), original elaborately gilt decorated cloth. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.

First edition, with 152 splendid folio chromolithographed plates of spectacular bindings in the library of Windsor Castle, along with frontispiece of the Royal Library, chromolithographed dedication leaf, title page, and text printed within chromolithographed borders. An excellent copy of this scarce work in the original cloth, elaborately gilt-stamped in imitation of an older binding.

One of the most spectacular illustrated catalogues devoted to bookbindings, this volume constitutes a remarkable example of the color printing skills of Griggs, who became "Chromolithographer to the Queen" for his excellent work in reproducing fine art books in color. This catalogue exhibits some of the finest Royal bindings from the Windsor Castle Library, including French and English bindings, some of which are identified, such as Clovis Eve; a few others are bound in the style of Grolier, some of the bindings are signed with initials, and six lovely examples of Islamic bindings are included as well. All of the bindings bear the royal insignia, and most are from the 16 and 17th centuries. Richard Holmes, who wrote the Introduction and Notes, served as the Librarian of Windsor Castle. From the collection of Phiroze Randeria, with his bookplate. The 2001 book Eloquent Witnesses: Bookbindings and Their History (Mirjam Foot, editor) was dedicated to his memory and the essays were based largely on studies of the books in his collection.

Light foxing to blank endleaves only. Fine condition. A splendid volume, with a nice provenance, in bright and beautiful original cloth-gilt binding.
