"THE CRUX OF THE MATTER IS WHETHER TOTAL WAR… IS JUSTIFIABLE, EVEN WHEN IT SERVES A JUST PURPOSE": HIROSHIMA, FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY FOUR OF THE SIX SURVIVORS PROFILED

HERSEY, John. Hiroshima. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Hersey’s best-known book, inscribed by four of the six survivors profiled in the book: Kiyoshi Tanimoto (The Reverend), Masakazu Fujii (Medical Doctor), Hatsuyo Nakamura (signed in Japanese) and Dr. Terufumi Sasaki.

"The quietest and the best of all the stories that have been written about the most spectacular explosion in the time of man" (New York Times Book Review). "Hersey's best-known book, Hiroshima, [was] hailed by one reviewer as 'one of the great classics of the war' (New Republic, 9 Sept. 1946). Hersey completed this work after a trip to Japan in 1945-1946; the trip was cosponsored by Life magazine, for which he had worked as an editor and a correspondent in 1944-1945, and by the New Yorker. An account of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the work was first printed as an issue of the New Yorker (31 Aug. 1946) and later read in its entirety on ABC radio" (ANB). "Hersey drew from the victims themselves the understanding of history that had eluded him as a war correspondent. The six Hiroshima residents told him how they had lived before the bomb struck, why they were not killed, and precisely how illness, exhaustion, and personal sorrow had qualified their survival" (Contemporary Novelists). This exceptional copy has been inscribed and signed by four of those six, three in English and one in Japanese, and two of them have dated their inscriptions June 21, 1948. Bookseller label on rear pastedown; old bookseller description from 1950 laid in.

Book with tape residue on front and rear covers, dust jacket with a bit of toning to spine, clean and near-fine. An exceptional and most desirable copy, inscribed by four of the six survivors profiled by Hersey.
