HERLIHY, James Leo. Midnight Cowboy. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1965). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Herlihy’s much anticipated second novel, a presentation copy inscribed by him in the year of publication: “Charles E. Castellanos—Con mucho gusto en conocerle. James Herlihy. Dallas Oct 6, 1965.” Herlihy’s novel was the basis for the 1969 Oscar-winning film.

Novelist and playwright James Herlihy’s second novel tells the story of Joe Buck, a naïve Texan who travels to New York and befriends the crippled con man Ratso Rizzo. Adapted to the screen in 1969, the film earned stars Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman Best Actor nominations and won three Oscars, including Best Picture.

Book near-fine, with mild discoloration to bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket near-fine, with light rubbing to extremities. An attractive copy, most desirable inscribed.
