O. HENRY’S THE FOUR MILLION, INCLUDING HIS CLASSIC “GIFT OF THE MAGI”
HENRY, O. (PORTER, William Sydney). The Four Million. New York: McClure, Phillips, 1906. Octavo, original gilt-stamped red cloth.
First edition, first state, of O. Henry’s second published book, in bright gilt-stamped original cloth.
Porter was a part-time writer and a bank clerk convicted of embezzlement. “Coining the pen name ‘O. Henry,’ he published several stories during the three years he served before his early release in 1901 due to good behavior… Maintaining his pen name so as to keep his criminal record concealed, he became a prolific writer, incorporating his vast experiences into carefully structured but quickly produced stories that were published in several major periodicals… As his success grew, Porter began to republish his stories in collections that loosely linked previously disparate stories with new and rewritten materials into a book-length format. His first of many such semiannual collections, Cabbages and Kings (1904), cemented his growing public reputation… Large audiences worldwide still delight in his humor, humanism, and the classic ‘O. Henry Twist’ that somehow manages an unlikely happy ending in even his most somberly realistic stories” (ANB). The Four Million contains some of Henry’s most popular stories, including “The Gift of the Magi,” “The Furnished Room” and “The Cop and the Anthem.” First state, with “Published April, 1906” on copyright page and “lony” (rather than “long”) in the prefatory notice. Without scarce dust jacket. BAL 16271. Contemporary owner signature to title page dated “August 1906.”
A fine copy.
