SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF MARGUERITE HENRY’S “BREAKTHROUGH BOOK,” WITH AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY HER
HENRY, Marguerite. Justin Morgan Had a Horse. Chicago: Wilcox & Follett, (1945). Quarto, original brown cloth, pictorial endpapers, pictorial dust jacket.
First edition of Henry’s first book about horses, richly illustrated by Wesley Dennis (including four pages in color and color pictorial endpapers), accompanied by an autograph letter on Henry’s on stationary that reads: “Mr. Stunz—If this doesn’t give you enough material, please call me. Marguerite Henry (Mrs. S.C.) 756-3325.”
“Henry’s breakthrough book, Justin Morgan Had a Horse, tells the true story of an 18th-century Vermont colt noted for his power and speed who fathered a new breed of American horse, the Morgan… The prose of this Newbery Honor Book is perfectly complemented by the artwork of Wesley Dennis, whose beautiful drawings and watercolor illustrations add great appeal to most of the author’s works” (Silvey, 304-05).
Book fine, dust jacket near-fine with light rubbing to extremities. Autograph signed letter extremely good, with a few stains and faint creasing. A most desirable copy.
