FIRST EDITION OF MISTER ROBERTS, INSCRIBED BY THOMAS HEGGEN

HEGGEN, Thomas. Mister Roberts. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1946). Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, early printing, of Heggen's first and only novel, a wonderful copy inscribed by him, "For C— and B— C—, with immense liking and good wishes, Tom Heggen," basis for the popular stage play and film starring Henry Fonda.

The Iowa-born Heggen enlisted in the Navy right after Pearl Harbor, and it was while serving aboard the USS Virgo that he "began writing short stories based on day-to-day life aboard the ship. Following his discharge… he brought his stories to his cousin, novelist Wallace Stegner." Three of the stories soon appeared in the Atlantic Monthly and the May 1946 publication of Mister Roberts quickly "earned a place on the bestseller list, and established Heggen as one of the most promising writers to come out of World War II" (ANB). The 1948 Broadway adaptation, coauthored with director Joshua Logan, won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Play. The popular comedy reached the screen in 1955, with Henry Fonda reprising his award-winning Broadway performance. Heggen, however, did not live to see his novel reach the screen. In 1949 the 29-year-old writer was found dead in his apartment. At the time of his death, Heggen was "universally acknowledged as one of the best of the young American writers" (New York Times). First edition, early printing without date on title page. Dust jacket design and illustrations by Samuel Hanks Bryant.

Book fine; light edge-wear to near-fine dust jacket. Given Heggen's tragic death, books inscribed by him are quite uncommon.
