1768 FIVE-VOLUME BIBLE IN HEBREW, IN CONTEMPORARY FULL CALF BINDINGS
HEBREW BIBLE. Chamishah Chumshei Torah—Tikun Sopherim. Amsterdam: Leib Soesmans, 1768. Five volumes. Quarto, contemporary full marbled calf gilt, raised bands. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box.
Attractive five-volume 1768 Bible in Hebrew published in Amsterdam, each volume with attractive engraved additional title-page by Aaron Santcroos, in contemporary marbled calf bindings.
This edition includes the first appearance of a well-regarded Torah commentary by 18th-century chief rabbi of Amsterdam Saul Lowenstam, called “he-Hatzer ha-Hadasha.” Also with commentaries by Rashi and Abrabanel. Vinograd, Amsterdam 1951. Zedner, 111. Not in Darlow & Moule.
Interiors generally quite clean; contemporary bindings somewhat age-worn (one spine with a few compartments worn away) but still sound. A very good copy, attractively boxed. Scarce.
