“THE BASIS OF ALL THE MODERN EDITIONS OF THE BIBLE”: 1705 FIRST VAN DER HOOGHT EDITION OF THE BIBLE IN HEBREW

(HEBREW BIBLE). Biblia Hebraica. Amsterdam and Utrecht: Boom, et al., 1705. Two volumes. Thick octavo, 19th-century full brown calf rebacked in the 20th century, front and rear covers with armorial stamp in gilt of the Hulme bequest (‘Munificentia Hulmiana’), raised bands, renewed endpapers.

First van der Hooght edition of the Hebrew Bible, finely printed in Hebrew with marginal subject-headings in Latin, with woodcut title page and divisional titles, and an additional engraved title page.

“The basis of all the modern editions of the Bible” (Jewish Encyclopedia), Everardo van der Hooght’s edition of the Hebrew Bible “reproduced in the main the Athias-Leusden text of 1667.” His edition became very popular and was reprinted many times, becoming “the father of the ordinary reprints” (Darlow & Moule, 5141). Complete with engraved additional title page in architectural framework, letterpress title page printed in red and black, woodcut additional divisional title pages for Early Prophets, Later Prophets & Hagiographa, embellished with engraved tailpieces. Part of the Hulme bequest, with arms and motto (‘Munificentia Hulmiana’) stamped in gilt on front and rear covers of both volumes. Owner signature in Volume II.

Interiors generally quite clean; corners gently rubbed. An attractive, extremely good copy.
