HANDSOMELY BOUND "ANNIVERSARY EDITION" OF HARDY'S WORKS, ONE OF 1250 SETS

HARDY, Thomas. The Writings of Thomas Hardy in Prose and Verse. With Prefaces and Notes. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, (1920). Twenty-one volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, top edges gilt, uncut.

"Anniversary Edition" of Hardy's works, number 297 of 1250 sets, illustrated with 78 photolithographic plates and a map of Wessex in Volume I, handsomely bound.

"It was as a poet that [Hardy] wished to be remembered… [and if] he had written only his earlier novels—that is, the series from Under the Greenwood Tree to The Woodlanders—it might be granted that his poems were his more valid contribution to English literature. Yet these novels are so instinct with the very soil of England, so penetrating in their psychology, so fresh and colorful, that they alone would have made any writer's fame. But it is the two books which brought down on their author the foul abuse of every bigot and dullard of three continents that are Thomas Hardy's great and unique achievement. Nowhere else in English fiction are to be found the profundity, the unification of feeling, the perfect presentation of great tragedy, that make Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure immortal" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 277). This edition also includes such masterpieces as Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge.

Faint dampstain and minor wrinkling to text of Desperate Remedies; very faint marginal dampstain to only a few leaves of The Hand of Ethelberta and to upper margin of Life's Little Ironies. Bindings fine, gilt bright. A very lovely illustrated set in near-fine condition.
