“MARCELLA HAD FIXED THE PLAYHOUSE VERY COZILY…”

GRUELLE, Johnny. Marcella: A Raggedy Ann Story [cover title]. Joliet, New York, Chicago and Boston: P.F. Volland, (1929). Octavo, original half black cloth, original pictorial black paper boards, illustrated endpapers, original matching gift box.

Early printing of this richly illustrated compilation of stories set in Marcella’s playhouse, featuring “almost every major character”— Gruelle’s tribute to his daughter’s memory. A lovely copy in original gift box.

After his daughter fell ill in 1915, cartoonist Johnny Gruelle and his family began making copies of a rag doll he had designed for the sick child; and, in 1918, Gruelle’s book of Raggedy Ann Stories saw print, with Ann’s brother Andy making his bow in his own title two years later. The doll siblings enjoyed a long series of adventures, including this long-awaited tribute to Gruelle’s late daughter, containing 11 stories with “almost every major character Johnny Gruelle had ever created or written about” (Hall). One story, “Through the Door,” about a dying little boy, was the closest he would ever come to describing his daughter’s death. A first edition of this work cannot be differentiated from other early Volland printings, as all copies published between 1928 and 1934 were identical internally and were bound in the same VHC #2 format, with cloth spines. “Because by 1928, Volland had abandoned the regular use of its ‘edition’ designations, one cannot assume that these Volland books of the late 1920s and early 1930s were first editions just because they happen to be unstated [as here]” (Hall, 69). Thus, it is appropriate to call all early Volland copies in VHC #2 bindings “early printings.” Hall, 122.

A nearly fine copy, with only the faintest marks of handling and small marginal closed tear to page 9. Some corners split on scarce original gift box.
