"NATURE AND WAR MADE ME TRAITOR TO MY SOUL"
GREY, Zane. The Day of the Beast. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, (1922). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. $2200.
First edition of one of the scarcer titles from the father of the Western novel, in the even scarcer original dust jacket.
Zane Grey, known for his popular Westerns and adventure tales including the bestselling Riders of the Purple Sage, switched genres for this novel of Roaring Twenties social criticism in which a disabled World War I veteran returns to his small hometown only to discover—and reject—the degeneracy of American postwar society. Now "a very scarce title" according to bibliographer Don Warren, the work enjoyed enough success in its day to inspire a trend of naming boys after protagonist Daren Lane. First edition, with code "G-W" on copyright page. Bibliographical Check List of the Writings of Zane Grey, 3.
Book and dust jacket with minor wear to extremities. A near-fine copy.
