FIRST EDITION OF THE BOOK THAT ESTABLISHED KATE GREENAWAY’S REPUTATION AS AN ILLUSTRATOR
GREENAWAY, Kate. Under the Window. Pictures & Rhymes for Children. London: George Routledge & Songs, [1879]. Slim quarto, original half green cloth with pictorial paper boards recased.
First edition, first state of Greenaway’s first book as an author and illustrator, copiously and beautifully color-illustrated.
When the color printer Edmund Evans first met Greenaway, he immediately purchased the drawings and illustrations she had brought him, conceiving Under the Window and initiating Kate Greenaway’s career. Despite the expensive six shilling price, the first edition sold out at once. Without rare original dust jacket. First state, with “End of Contents” on page 14. Schuster & Engen 201.1a. Pencil date.
A few spots of soiling to text, light wear to extremities. An extremely good copy.
