COMPLETE RUN OF GREELEY’S THE JEFFERSONIAN

GREELEY, Horace. The Jeffersonian. Albany: James Henry for the Proprietors, 1838-39. Quarto, contemporary three-quarter sheep, marbled boards.

Bound copy of all 52 issues of Greeley’s first political weekly, February 17, 1838-February 9, 1839.

Greeley’s Whig editorials in the popular but unprofitable literary and non-partisan weekly the New Yorker caught the attention of politician, editor, and campaign manager Thurlow Weed, who needed an editor for an Albany political weekly to promote the New York gubernatorial campaign of William H. Seward. Greeley readily accepted the position. “The Jeffersonian was a real success. It was more than a campaign paper; it was an important factor in electing Seward, and it gave Greeley a reputation. Incidentally, it marked the beginning of the long political alliance of Weed, Seward, and Greeley” (Mott, American Journalism, 267-68). Marginal owner signatures of P.J. Oberacre.

Only very light scattered foxing; some rubbing to sound contemporary binding. Very good condition.
