“AND LEAVES THE WORLD TO DARKNESS AND TO ME”: BODONI’S 1793 LIMITED EDITION OF GRAY’S POEMS, ONE OF ONLY 300 COPIES

GRAY, Thomas. Poems by Mr. Gray. Parma: Bodoni, 1793. Square octavo, original full velum, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine label, all edges gilt.

Giambattista Bodoni’s elegant limited edition of Gray’s poetry, one of only 300 copies, set in a selection of the 298 typefaces that bear Bodoni’s name.

The final poem of Bodoni’s edition is Gray’s famous “Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard” (first published in 1751), considered a masterpiece and one of the most famous poems in the English language. Giambattista Bodoni was an Italian engraver, publisher, printer and typographer of high repute, remembered for designing a family of 298 different typefaces that bear his name. While Bodoni admired the type of John Baskerville, Pierre Fournier and Firmin Didot, he developed his own style, which is characterized by a narrow underlying structure with an extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes. Bodoni began his career as a typesetter in the Vatican’s Propaganda Fide. In 1766, he was hired by the Duke Ferdinand of Bourbon-Parma to found la Stamperia Reale in Parma, recognized as one of the great houses of Italy. Bodoni’s famous specimen book, Manuale Tipografico was first published in 1788, containing 100 roman, 50 italic and 28 Greek minuscule fonts. His success was such that in 1790 the Duke gave him permission to open his own printing works, Officina Bodoni, at which this handsome edition of Gray was produced. Lowndes, 931. Brunet II, 1718. Graesse III, 141. Bookplates of Caroline Maria Vernon and Olin Lake Merriam.

Light shallow foxing to margins of text only. An about-fine copy of this elegant production.
