PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT GRAVES AND HIS WIFE NANCY NICHOLSON, WHO ILLUSTRATED THE VOLUME: TREASURE BOX, ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES

GRAVES, Robert. Treasure Box. (London: Chiswick Press), [1919]. Square 16mo, original blue paper wrappers; pp. 14. Housed in a custom chemise and half morocco clamshell box.

First edition of this collection of ten poems, one of only 200 copies finely printed at the Chiswick Press. Presentation copy inscribed on the inside of the front wrapper by Robert Graves and Nancy Nicholson, Graves' wife, who provided the line illustrations: [in Nicholson's hand] "To Mr & Mrs Cockerell from Nancy Nicholson &" [in Graves' hand] "Robert Graves, Dingle Cottage, Boar's Hill, Oxford."

"Graves was in love with the young, stylish, and artistic but also fiercely dogmatic Annie Mary Pryde (Nancy Nicholson; 1899–1977), daughter of the artist William Newzam Prior Nicholson, and sister of the artist Ben Nicholson. They were married on 23 January 1918; and in 1919 (after Graves' demobilization) they moved into Dingle Cottage in John Masefield's garden on Boar's Hill near Oxford, and Graves began reading English at St John's. Graves' hopes for popular success as a poet faded after the poor reception given in 1920 to Country Sentiment, his third volume of poems; while in 1921 Nancy's efforts to earn money by running a shop on Boar's Hill also ended in failure. In addition, between 1919 and 1924 Nancy gave birth to four children in under five years; while Graves (now an atheist like his wife) suffered from recurring bouts of shell-shock" (ODNB). With vignette title page and one line-drawing by Nicholson. Higginson A4. Recipient Sir Sydney Cockerell, once secretary to William Morris, was Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge from 1908-37.

A fine copy, scarce and desirable in wrappers and presented by both Graves and Nicholson.
