SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF TEN POEMS MORE, ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES SIGNED BY ROBERT GRAVES

GRAVES, Robert. Ten Poems More. Paris: Hours Press, 1930. Slim folio (8 by 11-1/2 inches), half black calf, uncut.

Signed limited first edition, number 156 of 200 copies set by hand, privately printed on hand-press, and signed by Robert Graves, in original half calf with decorative paper boards by New Zealand-born artist Len Lye.

"In 1925 Graves met the American poet Laura Riding, and from that time his attitude and style changed. He was affected not by her poetic procedures, which he never sought to imitate, but by her unique and antinomian personality, by the fact that he was in love with her, and by her major role in relieving him from the post-war trauma from which he had suffered. He began to distrust everything that had been imposed upon him by convention, and to defend some aspects of modernism… His poetry became a means of self-critical exploration of his own psyche… The poems' uniquely pungent quality comes less, perhaps, from their preoccupation with romantic love than from the poet's resistance, often ironically, skeptically, or even cynically expressed, to its demands, and existential inconveniences. Thus, in Graves's best poetry, mostly written between 1930 and 1950, a naturally lyrical voice is undercut and challenged by a down-to-earth, gritty, paradoxical enlightenment on the subject of the poet's own motives and desires" (Hamilton, 194-95). Without scarce glassine.

A few tiny spots to interior, only light wear to extremities. A near-fine signed copy. Rare.
