"JASPER STOOD ALL NIGHT IN A BLIZZARD TO BUY A THIRD GALLERY TICKET FOR THE PREMIERE…"

GOREY, Edward. The Blue Aspic. [New York]: (Meredith, 1968). Slim, oblong octavo, original pictorial black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of famed illustrator Edward Gorey's gothic tale of opera and unrequited love.

Of his own writings, "Gorey maintains that his stories are simply entertainments in the nonsense tradition of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear" (Silvey, 278). However, Daniel Handler, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events, has argued that Gorey's stories possess an additional quality, telling an interviewer that The Blue Aspic was the first book he ever bought with his own money, chosen because it lacked the saccharine elements present in so much of children's literature. Toledano A27a. Bookseller ticket.

Book with light wear mainly to spine ends, dust jacket with only minor rubbing and toning to extremities. A near-fine copy.
