Temple of Gold

"SOPHISTICATED, OBSTREPEROUS AND ORIGINAL": FIRST EDITION OF WILLIAM GOLDMAN'S ELUSIVE FIRST NOVEL, TEMPLE OF GOLD, 1957

GOLDMAN, William. The Temple of Gold. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1957. Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of the semi-autobiographical first novel by the Oscar-winning screenwriter and novelist, famed for his screenplays for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men, as well as the screenplay for his own novel, Princess Bride, in scarce original dust jacket.

Goldman's coming-of-age first novel follows the young life of Ray Euripides Trevitt as he makes his way to Harvard where he "manages to learn a lot about women, flunks out," and has a brief stint in the Army, followed by a sudden marriage. In many ways, Temple of Gold echoes Goldman's own life. In an interview he spoke of graduating college in 1952, followed by the Army and Columbia graduate school. He recalled, "I was so panicked that I would end up my life as a copywriter in an ad agency in Chicago that I wrote Temple of Gold in less than three weeks… I had no idea what I was doing" (New York Times). Nevertheless, on publication the novel won praise as "entertaining… uninhibited… Goldman has created a character and followed him down on an offbeat path which is decidedly his own. It's sophisticated, obstreperous and original" (Kirkus). He went on to win Oscars for his screenplays for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and All the President's Men (1976), and authored the screenplays based on his 1973 novel, Princess Bride, and his 1974 thriller, Marathon Man. "Despite his Hollywood success, though, Goldman viewed the film business with a jaundiced eye. As he often pointed out, he considered himself not a screenwriter but a novelist who wrote screenplays" (New York Times). First edition, first printing: "First Edition" stated on copyright page.

Book fine; mild soiling, light edge-wear mainly to spine ends of scarce extremely good dust jacket.
