GIMBEL’S SENT SANTA UP A LADDER
(PHILADELPHIA) GIMBEL’S. Original architectural photograph. [Philadelphia: no photographer, circa 1940]. Silver nitrate photograph, measuring 10 by 8 inches, framed. $150.
Original photograph of the façade of Gimbel’s—one of the mainstay sponsors of Philadelphia holiday celebrations.
The Philadelphia store in Gimbel’s chain was the home office of sorts and sponsored the city’s major holiday parades—as well as a very unique Christmastime tradition: Santa climbing a fire truck ladder into an upper-floor window of the store, marking his arrival for taking gift requests. Gimbel’s moved across Market Street in 1980 and closed its doors only eight years later. Leary’s Book Store can be seen in the background.
Near-fine condition.
