Baseball Is a Funny Game

INSCRIBED BY BASEBALL’S BELOVED JOE GARAGIOLA

GARAGIOLA, Joe. Baseball Is a Funny Game. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, (1960). Octavo, original orange cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of the famed catcher and broadcaster’s first book, inscribed by him, “Best Regards, Joe Garagiola,” scarce in original dust jacket.

“I don’t know anything about baseball, but I know something about Joe Garagiola… and he’s funny!” (Jack Parr). Fondly known as “good wit, no hit” during his Major League career, Garagiola published Baseball is a Funny Game after leaving the game to begin his career as a popular broadcaster for NBC and co-host of The Today Show. On publication it won praise as “a collection of good stories well told. Along the way you may pick up a fairly extensive working knowledge of the game that is a perpetual race between a man and ball. The fine points—and the rough ones—are all here” (New York Times). In early 2013 he announced his retirement at the age of 87, displaying “the trademark humor and speaking skills that propelled him into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster” (MLB). “First Edition” stated on copyright page. Smith 13270. Grobani 27-26.

Light foxing to preliminaries, slight edge-wear, mild rubbing to dust jacket. A scarce near-fine inscribed copy.
