Written by Sir Walter Armstrong, Director of the National Gallery, Ireland, this monograph contains an impressive collection of Thomas Gainsborough’s portraits and landscapes, as well as extensive biographical and critical discussion of the artist. Acclaimed as “the father of modern landscape, and of modern pastoral” (DNB), Gainsborough was also “the favorite portraitist of British high society” (Janson, 452). The chief rival of Sir Joshua Reynolds, he painted portraits of Queen Charlotte, Richard Brinsley Sheridan and David Garrick, all included in this work. Illustrated title page and engraved headpieces. Freitag 3954.

Plates and text fine, joints of armorial binding expertly repaired. An impressive production.
