"'MUST READING' FOR EVERYONE" (RONALD REAGAN): FIRST EDITION OF FREE TO CHOOSE, INSCRIBED IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION BY MILTON AND ROSE FRIEDMAN

FRIEDMAN, Milton, and FRIEDMAN, Rose. Free to Choose. A Personal Statement. New York and London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, (1980). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, first printing, of the Friedmans' persuasive argument for the free market, based on the groundbreaking PBS series Free to Choose, an exceptional presentation copy inscribed on the half title in the year of publication by Nobel laureate Milton Friedman and his wife, economist Rose Friedman, "For D— C—, Milton Friedman, Rose Friedman, Feb 3, 1980."

Milton Friedman was "the spiritual heir to Adam Smith… [and] one of the 20th century's leading economic scholars, on a par with giants like John Maynard Keynes and Paul Samuelson." Free to Choose, co-authored with his wife, acclaimed economist Rose Friedman, won praise from Ronald Reagan as "'must reading' for everyone." The book offers clear evidence of Friedman's talent for presenting "complicated ideas in simple and lucid ways" (New York Times). Based on the ten-part 1980 PBS series of the same name, Friedman would note: "the book was based on the transcript… and came after the television program, not, as is usual, the other way around. In the end, the project turned into the most exciting experience of our lives" (Free to Choose Media). First edition, first printing: with "First Edition" on the copyright page. The recipient, Daniel Cain, was co-founder and chairman of the investment banking firm, Cain Brothers & Company, where he was "regarded as one of the industry's top healthcare-services investment bankers and a pioneer in executing mergers and acquisitions of healthcare organizations" (Columbia Business School). His philanthropic work included serving on Columbia University's Board of Overseers, and on the board of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

A fine presentation copy with a notable association.
