“AMONG THE TRAGIC POETS OF THE WORLD”

FRANK, Robert. The Lines of My Hand. New York: Pantheon, (1989). Tall quarto, original photographic paper boards, original dust jacket.

First revised American edition of Frank's classic autobiography in photographs, edited by him, with over 100 duotones and color images.

Kerouac said Robert Frank "sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world." This first revised American edition of Frank's 1972 book includes images from his best-known work, Les Americains (1958) along with many intimate images of his family and those made during years of travel across Europe, Peru, North America and England. Frank, who edited this edition, writes: "I am listening to my voice. The landscape changes and me too. Years ago a first version of The Lines of My Hand was published. Since then many have gone a way. I continue to look and search for an image that comes close to a truth. it is my choice, it is my fate, and I continue." Issued simultaneously in Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom. See Open Book, 286; Parr & Badger I:237.
