A "FIRST-RATE NOVEL OF WWII": FIRST EDITION OF C.S. FORESTER'S THE GOOD SHEPHERD, 1955, INSCRIBED BY HIM

FORESTER, C.S. The Good Shepherd. London: Michael Joseph, (1955). Octavo, original black paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of Forester's widely praised 1955 WWII novel whose account of a fictional U.S. Naval Commander features "stalking danger that haunts page" (New York Times), inscribed of the half title by him, "To S— V— with best wishes from C.S. Forester," basis for the 2020 film starring Tom Hanks from his faithful screenplay adaptation of the novel.

Forester, famed for his Hornblower novels, here tells the "story of 48 desperate hours in the life" of his fictional U.S. Naval Commander Krause, whose Atlantic convoy, aided only by a destroyer and two other ships, must guard a line of 27 merchant ships pursued by a German wolf pack. It won early praise as a "first-rate novel of WWII …[with] stalking danger that haunts every page." In an interview Forester, who died in 1966, spoke of the inspiration behind Good Shepherd. "The whole question of the responsibility of a captain has interested me for a long time. For the sake of discipline he can't often ask for or take advice, and he has to make up his mind right off." Forester confessed that when Commander Krause finally falls asleep at the end of the book, he "toyed with the idea of speaking a final word to him through the voice tube—'Captain to the bridge, Sir'… A great temptation… but I thought he'd earned his rest'" (New York Times). Basis for the 2020 film Greyhound starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay adaptation of Forester's novel. Directed by Aaron Schneider, it has been called "the most authentic film portrayal of naval warfare since 2003's Napoleonic Wars epic Master & Commander" (Forbes). First edition, first printing: with no statement of editions or printings on the copyright page. The identity of the recipient Simon Virgo is unverified.

Book fine; light edge-wear, small bit of tape reinforcement to verso of colorful near-fine dust jacket.
