Nobel Prize Speech

SHELBY FOOTE’S OWN COPY OF FAULKNER’S NOBEL PRIZE SPEECH, SIGNED BY FOOTE, AN EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 1500 COPIES

FAULKNER, William. The Nobel Prize Speech. (New York: Spiral, 1951). Slim octavo, original tan paper wrappers, staple bound as issued; unpaginated [8]. Housed in a custom chemise.

Limited edition of Faulkner’s acceptance speech at the 1950 Nobel Prize award ceremony, a scarce association copy from the estate of award-winning historian Shelby Foote, who was Faulkner’s close friend and a fellow Mississipiian, signed by Foote above the printed “December 10, 1950” on initial leaf.

“William Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1950 and in acceptance made a brief but important statement about his belief ‘that man will not merely endure: he will prevail… because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance’ and ‘the writer’s duty is to write about these things” (Hart, 272-3). This important association copy of the limited edition of Faulkner’s Nobel Prize Speech comes directly from the estate of novelist and historian Shelby Foote, with his signature. “On June 18 [1941], Ben Wasson came to visit, bringing with him a young sergeant on furlough. Shelby Foote was an aspiring Greenville writer” (Blotner, 428). Over the years, Faulkner and fellow Mississippian Foote became close friends, with Faulkner frequently expressing his appreciation of the young novelist’s works. While Foote is best known today as a historian— his massive 3000-page Civil War is one of the most popular histories of the American Civil War— as a novelist he garnered much contemporary praise and notice as Faulkner’s literary heir. Limited edition of 1500 copies printed in March 1951 “for the friends of Random House and The Spiral Press.” Also issued in a limited edition of 2500 copies. Petersen D16g. See Brodsky 296-99. Penciled “The Nobel Prize Speech. Faulkner, William” to chemise front cover.

Text fine; faint toning to wrappers. A scarce about-fine copy with a highly significant association.
