FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE FIRST JAMES BOND NOVEL, CASINO ROYALE
FLEMING, Ian. Casino Royale. New York: Macmillan, 1954. Octavo, original dark green cloth, original dust jacket.
First American edition, first printing, of Fleming’s first book, in first-issue dust jacket.
“Fleming accomplished an extraordinary amount in the history of the thriller. Almost singlehandedly, he revived popular interest in the spy novel, spawning legions of imitations, parodies, and critical and fictional reactions… Through the immense success of the filmed versions of his books, his character James Bond became the best known fictional personality of his time and Fleming the most famous writer of thrillers since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle” (Reilly, 571). The novel was twice made into a film, each titled Casino Royale: a 1967 Bond spoof with an all-star cast headed by Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, David Niven, and Woody Allen; and the 2006 thriller, starring Daniel Craig in his first outing as Bond and Judi Dench as M. First published in an English edition in 1953. “During the period that Macmillan was Fleming’s American publisher of the early Bond novels, it was their practice to print various prices on the edge of the front flap (as seen in proof states) and then trim the printed jackets to show only the price decided on” (Biondi & Pickard, 40). This copy shows the correct price of $2.75 on the top of the front flap; the bottom of the flap is price-clipped. Contemporary owner signature.
Book fine, very light wear to extremities of bright dust jacket with light soiling to white rear panel and two one-inch closed tears to rear panel archivally repaired; light fading to spine head and top of front panel. A handsome copy.
