THE BIOGRAPHY OF CARDINAL DON FR. FRANCISCO XIMÉNEZ DE CISNEROS, CHARLES V’S REGENT, THE DE FACTO RULER OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE DURING THE EARLY 16TH CENTURY

FLÉCHIER, Esprit. Historia de el Cardenal Don Fr. Francisco Ximénez de Zisneros. Leon: Antonio Briasson, 1712. Octavo, modern half brown calf, raised bands, black morocco spine label. $900.

Second Spanish edition, translated from the French first edition, of the biography of the man who served as regent for Charles V as well as Isabella’s confessor during the the early years of Spanish exploration, a crucial text for understanding Spanish influence during the early 16th century.

This is a leading early biography of Cardinal Ximénex de Cisneros, one of the leading figures of the Spanish Inquisition and an influential force in the exploration of the Americas.. Cisneros rose to power during the reign of Isabella. In 1492, he was recommended to Isabella as her confessor, a post which allowed him to give her extensive advice and counsel on both matters of state and private affairs. Though Cisneros rebelled against the gifts bestowed on him by the Court, he was gradually elevated to Archibishop of Toledo. When Philip died in 1506 (following Isabella’s 1504 dead), Cisneros set up a regent government until such a time as Ferdinand could assume the throne, preventing overthrow. Out of loyalty, Ferdinand made Cisneros Grand Inquisitor for Castile and Leon and asked the Pope to make Cisneros a Cardinal. When Ferdinand died in 1516, he left Cisneros as regent of Castile for Charles, who would become Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. During his time in power, Cisneros did much to advance education, including founding a university, and remains known for his sponsorship of the first polyglot Bible. The first edition was published in Paris in French in 1693; the first Spanish edition was published in Zaragoza in 1696. Ex-libris Loyola Seminary Library and St. Francis Xavier College, with stamps on edges of text block and last page and pencil notations on title page. Faint pen notation.

Only minor soiling to generally fresh text, first and last pages expertly repaired at inner margins, tape reinforcement to margin of last blank endpaper. A desirable copy in extremely good condition.
