"BY WORKING ONE CAN BEND FORTUNE. SHE IS FOND OF CRAFTY MEN"

FLAUBERT, Gustave. Salambo. (Chatham, England): The Folio Society, 1940. Octavo, contemporary full purple calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, green morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Illustrated edition in English, with ten copper-engraved plates by Dutch artist Ru van Rossem, handsomely bound in full purple morocco-gilt by Bayntun.

This novel about ancient Carthage earned Flaubert "a reputation as a master of the réalistes" (Harvey & Heseltine, 270), due to the painstaking research Flaubert performed to ensure its accuracy. Translated by Edward Powys Mathers with an introduction by Gerard Hopkins.

A bit of rubbing to joints. A lovely volume.
