"NO WORK CAN COMPARE TO EUCLID'S ELEMENTS IN SCIENTIFIC IMPORTANCE": LIMITED EDITION OF EUCLID'S ELEMENTS, 1944, DESIGNED BY BRUCE ROGERS, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES

(VALERY, Paul) EUCLID. Euclid. Elements of Geometry. Book One. New York: (at the Press of A. Colish for) Random House, 1944. Octavo, original silver-stamped blue cloth, uncut, original slipcase.

Limited edition of Book One of Euclid's Elements—covering the fundamentals of what we now refer to as "Euclidean Geometry"—one of only 500 copies. Designed by Bruce Rogers and with illustrations printed in color throughout, with an Introduction from an essay by Paul Valéry praising this timeless work as "masterpiece," featuring a title page image from a wood-cut by Gordon Craig.

"No work can compare to Euclid's Elements in scientific importance, and its first appearance in English was an event of great significance" (Rosenbach 19: 225). As Paul Valéry observes in his Introduction to this elegant limited edition, it was Greece that "invented geometry… an extraordinarily delicate and improbable achievement," and Euclid's Elements is its "masterpiece… the monument of Greek geometry." Euclid's timeless achievement is "still in common use today. Its author was a Greek mathematician living about 300 B.C. who founded a mathematical school in Alexandria in the reign of Ptolemy I. The Elements is a compilation of all earlier Greek mathematical knowledge since Pythagoras, organized into a consistent system so that each theorem follows logically from its predecessor; and in this simplicity lies the secret of its success" (PMM 25). Euclid's Elements first published in English in 1570. This is Book One of the 13 books that traditionally comprise Euclid's Elements—all published in this limited edition format by the press of A. Colish for Random House. As issued without dust jacket.
