“WHAT IS PROFESSEDLY TOO LIGHT FOR THE LEARNED AND TOO SIMPLE FOR THE STUDIOUS”: EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED AND ELEGANTLY BOUND FIRST EDITION OF MEMOIRS OF THE LITERARY LADIES OF ENGLAND, 1843
ELWOOD, Mrs. [Anne Katherine]. Memoirs of the Literary Ladies of England. London: Henry Colburn, 1843. Two volumes. Octavo, late 19th-century three-quarter blue morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, top edges gilt, uncut.
First edition of this collective biography of 29 groundbreaking English women writers, including Hannah More, Mary Godwin and Jane Austen, extra-illustrated with 91 plates depicting not only the women discussed but also other leading contemporary literary figures (chief among them Dr. Samuel Johnson), royals and nobles and various scenes of 18th-century British life. A fine set.
Elwood intended these biographies of important women of letters to inspire other “scribbling young women… [Elwood] knew that women with writerly ambition would scour [these life stories] for hints about success in a literary career, as she herself seems to have done” (Peterson, 132). The first woman to travel overland from England to India, Elwood also penned a colorful and detailed account of her travels. Each volume issued with a frontispiece portrait; this copy has been extra-illustrated with 91 plates. Attractively bound by Morrell.
Spines uniformly toned to green. A fine, extra-illustrated copy.
