"WHAT IS THIS SELF INSIDE US, THIS SILENT OBSERVER"

ELIOT, T.S. The Elder Statesman. London: Faber & Faber, (1959). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket, custom protective dust jacket.

First edition this play with classical inspiration, inscribed "for M— C— with love from Tom Eliot."

Like The Cocktail Party and The Confidential Clerk, The Elder Statesman was based on a classical paradigm; Eliot used Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus as the framework for his Elder Statesman. "In [these plays] Eliot moved closer to a more mannered realism, disguising his serious purpose under the form of modern drawing-room comedy, and discarding the closely-wrought poetic style of the earlier plays for a plain undecorated verse" (Hartnoll, 244). Gallup A70a.

Very mild toning to dust jacket spine. A fine copy.
