"WITH THE WARM REGARD OF HIS FRIEND": PRESENTATION-ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ON PUBLISHER'S DAY OF PUBLICATION BOOKPLATE

EISENHOWER, Dwight D. At Ease: Stories I Tell to Friends. Garden City: Doubleday, 1967. Octavo, original black cloth, original acetate.

Presentation-association first edition of President Eisenhower’s final book of memoirs, inscribed by him on official At Ease bookplate marking publication day (with printed caption "Published June 16, 1967, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania") affixed to the half title: "For Sam Vaughan with the warm regard of his friend, Dwight D. Eisenhower." The recipient was an editor at Doubleday who helped Eisenhower write his White House memoirs and the present, more personal volume.

The informal tone of this, Eisenhower's last volume of memoirs, reflects the author: "the general who hated war, the president who sought peace… quick to anger, quicker to forgive, usually sunny in his disposition… intelligent, well educated, a man of the broadest experience, but the characteristic that mattered most to most Americans was his personality. He loved life and he loved people" (ANB). Recipient Samuel Vaughan (1929-2012) was an editor at Doubleday who, at the age of 32 in 1961, was assigned to help former President Eisenhower write his memoirs. With the additional assistance of his son John, Eisenhower and Vaughan produced the two-volume White House memoirs, Mandate for Change 1953-1956 and Waging Peace 1956-1961. At the behest of Vaughan, Eisenhower included his observations of McCarthyism and Brown vs. Board of Education, definitive cultural moments during his administration. Vaughan also worked on the present volume, Eisenhower's more personal reminiscences. "First Edition" stated on copyright page. With frontispiece.

Minor toning to cloth, tiny chip to acetate, near-fine. A desirable association copy.
