“A LESSON LEARNED, A PRINCIPLE PROVED, OR AN OLD TRUTH EMPHASIZED”: EISENHOWER’S WHITE HOUSE YEARS, INSCRIBED BY HIM AFFECTIONATELY AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT

EISENHOWER, Dwight D. The White House Years: Mandate for Change 1953-1956. WITH: The White House Years: Waging Peace 1956-1961. Garden City: Doubleday, 1963-65. Together, two volumes. Thick octavo, original tan cloth, cartographic endpapers, original acetate, original slipcases.

Limited first editions of Eisenhower’s presidential memoirs, each volume one of only 1500 copies but unnumbered out of series, with Volume I warmly inscribed on the half title: "For Mrs. Elizabeth Graham with the affectionate regard of her devoted friends—and Merry Christmas! Mamie D. and Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1963," and inscribed by Eisenhower on a specially designed bookplate mounted on the half title of Volume II: "Merry Christmas—and affectionate regard Mamie Doud and Dwight D. Eisenhower."

Mandate for Change covers the years of Eisenhower's first presidential term, in which he grappled with such difficulties as the Rosenberg case and trouble in the Suez; Waging Peace covers Eisenhower's second term. The bookplate in Volume II depicts the Eisenhower Farm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, noting the publication date of "The Second Volume of 'The White House Years'" as "October 14, 1965," and bears recipient Elizabeth Graham's name typed above Eisenhower's inscription. Each volume illustrated with black-and-white photographic illustrations. Volume I does not include the limitation page, and seems to have been one of a few copies produced for Eisenhower to inscribe and distribute to friends. Volume II does include the limitation page, but is unnumbered and unsigned, bearing Eisenhower's gift inscription on the bookplate instead. Due to a printer's error, this copy of Volume II contains a duplicate signature, repeating pages 249-64, and is bound without the signature that would contain pages 265-81.

Fine condition. A desirable set of the limited edition, personally inscribed by Eisenhower for a friend.
