CHARMING POSTER FOR THE CHILDREN'S SPRING BOOK FESTIVAL
EICHENBERG, Fritz. Poster (Children's Spring Book Festival). New York: Herald Tribune, circa 1958. Poster measures 17 by 22 inches.
Original poster for the Children's Spring Book Festival, circa 1958, drawn by illustrator Fritz Eichenberg.
Illustrator Fritz Eichenberg's "humor and lifelong love and respect for animals" evolved from his childhood trips to the Cologne Zoo (Silvey, 222). "Never to be without a sketch pad at the zoo or the circus," Eichenberg recalls, "proved to be more profitable to me than years of study at art school"— readily seen in his illustrations for Elizabeth Coatsworth's children's book, Peaceable Kingdom (1958).This charming poster for the Children's Spring Book Festival, sponsored by the New York Herald Tribune, features a garlanded child reading a book with a lion and a lamb (both similarly garlanded) looking over her shoulders.
