Animation Cel (Jiminy Cricket)

ORIGINAL HAND-PAINTED DISNEY STUDIOS ANIMATION CEL OF JIMINY CRICKET

DISNEY STUDIOS. Original animation cel (Jiminy Cricket). [Anaheim, California]: Walt Disney Productions, 1959. Original hand-painted drawing on celluloid (measuring 6-1/4 by 9 inches), matted; entire piece measures 9 by 12 inches.

Charming, original hand-painted animation cel depicting one of Disney Studio’s most popular characters, Jiminy Cricket, circa 1959.

"A character… destined to endear himself to a large part of mankind" (Field, 140), Jiminy Cricket debuted in Walt Disney Studios' second animated feature film, Pinocchio (1940). He was the quick-thinking conscience of the marionette who wants to become a real boy. When he proved an audience favorite, he appeared in other Disney productions, notably the "I'm No Fool" personal safety instructional shorts broadcast on TV's Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s. Disneyland sold original Disney artwork, mostly in the form of hand-painted cels such as this one, from its opening in 1955. A 1956 Disneyland catalogue described the items as "hand inked and painted in full vivid color… Not copies, transfers or duplicates of any kind, but the actual hand-drawn art work used in photographing a recent Walt Disney picture" (Munsey, 190). A label on its verso indicates a participant at the "INA Spotlight" insurance agents' conference (September 1-November 30, 1959) received this cel—an especially appropriate choice, since Jiminy is reaching for what appears to be the chalk he used to teach safety lessons in each "I'm No Fool" short.

A few minor instances of paint crazing and flaking. Matte lightly toned. A vivid and lovely piece of original Disney Studios artwork, suitable for framing.
