“LARGER AND BRIGHTER THAN THE REALITY”: NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 55 ENGRAVED PLATES

DICKENS, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. Thick octavo, contemporary century three-quarter red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, black morocco spine label, marbled boards and endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, bound from early parts, of one of Dickens’ third novel and one of his most popular, illustrated with 39 etchings by Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”) and extra-illustrated with 55 engraved plates, handsomely bound.

Published in 20 monthly parts between March 1838 and September 1839, Dickens' third novel "most closely follows," of them all, "the 'life and adventures' pattern of Fielding, Smollett and other 18th-century novelists whose works he had loved from childhood?Nickleby attracted more notice than Dickens had received previously" (Schlike, 415-16). Its plot, characters and dialogue possess "the feel of theatre; it is as if Dickens saw human life conducted among lights of the stage, making it somehow larger and brighter than the reality" (Ackroyd, 283). Indeed, the public reading version of the text Dickens prepared "became one of his standard repertoire pieces. 'I think Nickleby tops all the readings,' Dickens reported" (Schlike, 417). This copy bound from a mix of early and later parts, displaying most first issue points, but with "visiter" corrected to "sister" on page 123 (a later state) and "latter" on page 160 (an earlier state). The first two plates are first state with the publisher's imprint. Plate 16 (facing page 248) printed from the third steel. Plate 23 (facing page 356) printed from the fourth steel. Plate 29 (facing page 457) printed from second steel, no priority. Without engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens from Maclise's painting; a different portrait precedes the title page. Without half title, as often. Eckel, 64-66. Smith I:5. Gimbel A41.

Scattered light to mild foxing, as often, mostly to plates. Binding with reinforcement to joints, mild wear to edges of board.
