JACK DEMPSEY’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, INSCRIBED BY HIM AND HIS WIFE
DEMPSEY, Jack. Dempsey. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1960. Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of the Manassa Mauler’s second autobiography, inscribed on the fly leaf, “To my good friends Ruth & Larry Cameron. Lots of Luck Pals, Jack Dempsey, 2/7/61.” Co-signed by Dempsey’s fourth wife Deanna.
“The inside story of a sport, an era and a man who rode them to the top,” Dempsey’s second autobiography includes photographic plates depicting the heavyweight champion and a comprehensive history of his life inside and outside the ring. Following a record-breaking boxing career (64-6-9, with 49 knockouts) that ended with the notorious “Battle of the Long Count,” Jack Dempsey opened a successful restaurant on Broadway between 49th and 50th, at whose cloth-covered tables celebrities gathered and tourists ogled. This first edition is inscribed to championship rodeo rider Robert “Larry” Cameron, known in his riding days as “Calgary Red”— close friend of heavyweight champion Maxie Baer.
Inscription bold and bright. Book and original dust jacket near-fine.
