"I FIND A LETTER FROM YOU, MY DEAR LAD, WRITTEN LAST JULY, REQUESTING MY AUTOGRAPH…": FIRST EDITION OF TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, 1840, WITH A TIPPED-IN SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER WRITTEN BY AUTHOR RICHARD DANA TO A YOUNG AUTOGRAPH SEEKER

DANA, Richard Henry, Jr. Two Years Before the Mast, a Personal Narrative of Life at Sea. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1840. 12mo, original brown cloth. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and full morocco slipcase.

First edition, second issue, of Dana's record of his maritime travels from Boston to San Francisco and back again in 1834-36, with a tipped-in autograph letter to a Mr. Wm H. Sweetser of Charlestown that reads: "I find a letter from you my dear lad, written last July, requesting my autograph. I very willingly send it to you, although I have so long neglected doing it. With great regard, Richd H. Dana. Boston, Nov 23rd/52."

"One of the first and freshest, because of its plain factual nature, of American accounts of the sea, the book has added importance because, while the brig was assembling hides for the return trip to Boston, Dana journeyed up into the California cattle country, of which he gives us our only trustworthy account before the 1849 gold rush" (Grolier American 100 46). "Dana's work is invaluable for its descriptions of California ranching and social life in Mexican times" (Streeter IV:2493). "Both literature and Americana of outstanding consequence" (Bennett, 86). First edition, second issue, with undotted "i" in the word "in" in the first line of copyright notice, and broken running head on page 9. BAL 4434. Cowan, 62. Sabin 18448. Howes D49. Zamorano 26. Armorial bookplate. Bookseller address label.
