"GROWN-UPS ARE COMPLICATED CREATURES, FULL OF QUIRKS AND SECRETS": FINE FIRST EDITION OF DAHL'S CLASSIC, DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD

DAHL, Roald. Danny the Champion of the World. London: Jonathan Cape, (1975). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Dahl's perennial favorite, "a touching tale of the relationship between a nine-year-old boy and his single-parent father," with illustrations by Jill Bennett—a lovely copy.

"For children, to read one Dahl book is reason to read them all, and to read them all is reason to read them all again" (Silvey, 185). Danny the Champion of the World "mythologizes a father-son relationship of the kind which, in both roles, Dahl had seen shattered. It is also an ode to a newly prevalent condition, that of the single parent, as well as to an old one, the rural outlaw" (Treglown, Roald Dahl, 206). "Danny… is perhaps Dahl's most straightforward and lyrical children's book—a touching tale of the relationship between a nine-year-old boy and his single-parent father, which harks back to Roald's beloved gypsy ideals… Shortly after he had finished Danny, Roald wrote Alfred Knopf a letter in which he articulated the joy he got from writing for children… 'I do not believe that any writer of adult books, however successful or celebrated he may be, has ever gotten one half the pleasure I have got from my children's books. The readers are so incredibly responsive and enthusiastic and excited, it's a real joy to know that this is one's own doing'" (Sturrock, Storyteller, 467-70).

A fine copy.
