"BELOVED BY GENERATIONS OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS": ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, IN A LOVELY KELLIEGRAM BINDING

CRUIKSHANK, George. The Travels and Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen. London and New York: Frederick Warne, circa 1920. Octavo, contemporary full red morocco gilt with multi-colored pictorial leather onlaid design of the Baron, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom slipcase.

Later edition of this illustrated version of the tales of Baron Munchausen, with 42 full-page and in-text illustrations, five by Cruikshank. Beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere in a Kelliegram-style binding with multi-colored leather inlaid portrait of Baron Munchausen on the front cover.

"Baron Munchausen, the hero of the most famous tall tales known, was given to the world by an unprincipled rogue whose talents, brashness and improbable exploits were almost comparable to those of Munchausen himself" (Godine 187). Rudolph Erich Raspe, a German scholar, poet, and scoundrel, anonymously wrote a forty-nine page pamphlet entitled Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia, published in 1785 and centered around the adventures of the German nobleman Hieronymus Munchhausen, "said to have lived from 1720-97, to have served in the Russian army against the Turks, and to have been in the habit of grossly exaggerating his experiences" (Drabble, 678). The stories, which went through numerous incarnations in subsequent editions throughout the 19th century, are "beloved by generations of children and adults" (Quayle, 133). This illustrated edition was first published in 1867; this edition photographically reproduces the hand-colored engravings of that edition in black-and-white. See Cohn 584.

Fine condition, a lovely volume.
