FIRST EDITION OF JAMES FENIMORE COOPER’S THE PIONEERS, THE FIRST OF “THE LEATHER-STOCKING TALES,” IN ORIGINAL BOARDS

[COOPER, James Fenimore]. The Pioneers, or the Sources of the Susquehanna; A Descriptive Tale. New York: Charles Wiley, 1823. Two volumes. Octavo, original drab paper boards, printed paper spine labels (Volume I respined with original paper label laid down), uncut. Housed in custom chemises and half morocco slipcase.

First edition, first printing, of Cooper’s third novel, the first of “The Leather-Stocking Tales,” scarce in original boards.

For The Pioneers, Cooper "turned to the Cooperstown of his youth, described the establishment of a new settlement in the wilderness, introduced the character of Leatherstocking, and began the ambivalent treatment of the westward movement that he would continue for many years. It… was a great success" (ANB). Cooper's greatest work is undoubtedly found in 'The Leather-Stocking Tales" (Fullerton, 67). "Single-handed, at a time when American literature was almost a thing unborn, Cooper created real and living books in two distinct fields— the sea story and the romantic story of the wilderness" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 178). The work was followed by the rest of Cooper's "Leather-Stocking Tales": The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder, and The Prairie. First printing of Volume I, with "J. Seymour, Printer" in the imprint and all expected textual variants. First printing and State B of Volume II, with page number 329 at the right side of the page. First printings of Volume I were published by J. Seymour, who then turned over printing responsibilities to Clayton (who published both later printings of Volume I and the first printing of Volume II). With half titles; without errata note in Volume II. Wright 671. Spiller & Blackburn 3. BAL 3829 (erroneously listing the first volume as the second printing). Bookplate.

Some expected spotting and foxing to text. Volume I respined with original paper label laid down; Volume II with repairs to spine ends and rear joint, front joint splitting. A very good copy, uncut in original boards.
