SCARCE 1795 FOLIO PRINTING OF UNITED STATES LAWS

(UNITED STATES CONGRESS). Laws of the United States. Volume I., Containing the Federal Constitution; the Acts of the Sessions of the First and Second Congress; the Treaties Existing Between the United States and Foreign, and the Several Indian Tribes, Also, Sundry Resolves of the First and Second Congress. Boston: Printed at the State Press, by Adams and Larkin, 1795. Folio (8-1/2 by 14 inches), original gray boards rebacked in calf, raised bands, brown morocco spine label, uncut.

First and only folio edition of the laws of the United States, a wide-margined, uncut copy in original boards.

This printing contains the United States laws from 1789 through 1793 and precedes the Folwell edition of 1796. Includes, among other legislative milestones, the laws creating the court system, the military, the census, the Treasury Department, the Post Office and the Bank of the United States. Also included are printings of the Federal Constitution and treaties between the United States and foreign nations—including English recognition of American independence in the Treaty of Paris in 1783—and Indian tribes. With seal of the United States on title page. Volume I only, as issued. Sabin cites two earlier octavo printings of this work in Philadelphia and in New York in 1791, with different pagination (Sabin 39421). HLC II: 803. Evans 29725. Evidence of bookplate; embossed library stamp to title page.

Repaired closed tears to last seven leaves of text, touching letterpress but not affecting legibility. Interior generlly clean, expert cleaning to last two leaves; light edge-wear to original boards, nicely rebacked. A very good and desirable uncut copy.
