Fifty Years in Wall Street

“THE DENSE IGNORANCE DISPLAYED BY MEN OUTSIDE OF WALL STREET, IN REGARD TO THE BUSINESS OF THAT GREAT MART, IS ALMOST INCREDIBLE”: FIRST EDITION OF HENRY CLEWS MUCH EXPANDED HISTORY OF WALL STREET

CLEWS, Henry. Fifty Years in Wall Street. "Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street" Revised and Enlarged. New York: Irving, (1908). Thick octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth, patterned endpapers.

Revised and enlarged version of Clews’ famous account of Wall Street, one of the few first-hand business chronicles from the turn of the century, covering 22 years beyond the reach of his work “Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street,” with over 60 black-and-white plates, most of which are portraits of prominent Wall Street figures.

Born in England, Clews was drawn to the world of American business at an early age. He soon became one of Wall Street's most respected investment bankers, publishing a "weekly circular which for years was widely known as an authoritative interpretation and forecast of market conditions" (ANB). "Few men can relate personal experience in Wall Street as rich as that of Mr. Clews, and the fact that he has strung together his facts with a thread of philosophy of his own has made this book particularly readable and useful… The book should be in the hands of every Wall Street man, young or old, and should be read by every student of the financial history of this country" (Daily Indicator, contemporary review of Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street). Revised and expanded version of Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street, which was first issued in 1887. With six pages of advertisements and contemporary reviews at rear. Contemporary owner stamp and signature.

An about-fine copy.
